Is there a Downside to Virtual Working

A study done by Stanford Graduate Business School makes a point that virtual workers feel that they are getting shafted, that employers require from them knowledge. Knowledge that is stored in a data warehouse, making them feel isolated and obsolete. It was a one way street. They would give and the employer would take. Click for Study.

This could be true to a point. I remember working for a company years ago, and one engineer in particular had all of the knowledge in his head: Process and Procedures for Manufacturing, Bills of Material for every vendor, Blueprints, files. Everything. After 50 years with the company, he never documented anything. Now he was about to retire. And he did retire. Our department felt the vacuum.

The Standford study suggests that to keep virtual workers from feeling isolated, employers needed to give them the opportunities to attend video conferences, and trade shows, and be mentored by other employees. This mentoring would of course provide knowledge to the virtual worker. Now it would be a two-way street.

Sure experience is golden as it relates to virtual workers, and knowledge should be documented so that the company benefits, and does not waste money and time should that virtual employee leave the company. As long as the virtual worker remains an employee, whatever knowledge they have about their job functions, they owe it to their employer to share it in a repository or data warehouse.


However, if the virtual employee is a contractor and not bound by the confines of the employer or company, then certain information should remain with the virtual employee or contractor.

If the company wants access to that virtual contractor's knowledge or Intellectual Property, then fees should be negotiated legally between them both. Or the virtual worker or contractor could copyright and publish her knowledge, and sell it to the company which agrees to pay for it. Intellectual property becomes an issue of contract terms and conditions whenever a virtual worker is not an employee. This should be handled with the assistance of a third party legal company, making working virtually an upside proposition.
